Hida-Takayama is a sizable town in the mountains of Gifu prefecture in central Japan.
It is known for its soba noodles, sake breweries, ramen restaurants, and 'Salubobo' monkey character.
For foreign tourists, it is a popular destination because of its well-preserved architecture.
There is a wonderful district of Sannomachi Edo-era shops and private residences, and outside town -
a historical park featuring many Gifu-ken buildings, including Gassho-Zukari houses.
Although it is given over to mass- tourism, one can still get a good feeling for life 200 years ago.
I visited in December when early winter snow was just starting to cover the town in a white blanket.
Visitors will find friendly locals, and English is widely spoken.
